VIDEO: Crompton calls a race start from the cockpit

NEIL Crompton has long been renowned as both a racer and a commentator, often doing both simultaneously over RaceCam when his two professions overlapped.

In most instances that consisted of chats with the commentary team during races, most memorably in his Bathurst 1000 debut in 1988 when he traded jokes from the cockpit with Doug Mulray and his team boss Peter Brock.

However, on one largely forgotten occasion, Crompton actually called the start of a race from the cockpit.

It happened during the final round of the AMSCAR Series in 1993, with host and lead caller Mike Raymond turning the microphone over to Crompton to talk his way through the start and opening lap of Heat 2.

The task was made even more challenging by the putridly-wet conditions, Crompton commentating solo as he launched his GIO-backed Holden Commodore VP from fifth on the grid, past Terry Finnigan into fourth, then following Paul Morris through the opening lap.
