Van Gisbergen smashes field in Sonoma qualifying

SHANE van Gisbergen has secured his maiden NASCAR pole position after dominating Xfinity Series qualifying at Sonoma Raceway.

No one could get near SVG, who backed up his last-start Portland win with a 0.372s pole margin today.

Van Gisbergen had yesterday also comfortably topped practice.

“The WeatherTech Chevrolet, it’s rapid,” he reacted.

“I didn’t do the best laps I could and still to have that gap on the field, these guys have done an awesome job.

“We changed quite a lot from last week; it was good, now I understand what I need from the car to be faster, so tried a whole bunch of stuff this week and Bruce (Schlicker, crew chief) let me change some stuff.

“To have that kind of gap is awesome.

“These NASCAR races, they’re an adventure, so I’m sure this afternoon won’t be plain sailing, but we’ll try to get through it.”

The Xfinity Series race at Sonoma will start 10am AEST today. Before then, Will Brown and Cam Waters will have their first crack at qualifying in the Cup Series from 8am AEST.
