FORD has developed one of the most potent Mustangs for the road, taking it to the Nurburgring to prove its wares.
Titled the GTD, the concept was something of an accident after Ford executives viewed the clay model of the GT3 version of the car and decided to create a road version.
To label the GTD as a road-going GT3 is wrong as the 5.2-litre V8 is mated to a Tremec dual-clutch automatic transmission and is based on the chassis of the regular Mustang offerings.
Produced by Ford’s partner in the GT3 build, Multimatic, the GTD has 800 horsepower on tap and, to offset the front heaviness, a transaxle restores an even front-rear weight distribution.
Suspension has been another focus featuring upgraded rear pushrod and inboard dampers, while double ball-joint struts replace the standard Mustang control arms.
Multimatic’s Adaptive Spool Valve dampers are installed on all corners of the GTD, with a motor switch providing 16 different bump and rebound responses.
No suitcases can fit in the boot, which has been reserved for a transmission cooler.
A donut-shaped reservoir feeding the dry-sump oil system sits where the transmission normally is, the system a first for the Mustang.
The Akrapovic titanium exhaust ensures the GTD will be heard from miles around and from the outside the GTD appears just like the GT3 version. There’s also an optional active rear wing.
And there is a fair battle to get one of these rare models, the price tag approximately $450,000 AUD.
