THE reveal of Jack Perkins’ latest throwback livery has generated plenty of interest among Supercars fans online.
Perkins’ Super2 Series return in Townsville will come in the colours that his father Larry and Peter Janson used on a Holden Torana A9X they drove to second place in the 1979 Bathurst 1000.

The retro scheme follows similar tributes to Larry’s Bathurst-winning efforts in 1982 and 1993 undertaken by Jack and sponsor Shaw and Partners for Super2 rounds in recent years.
However, the difference this time around is that Perkins Jnr is racing a Ford, lining up in a Blanchard Racing Team Mustang ahead of his co-driving duties alongside James Courtney.
Fan reaction to the Holden/Ford scenario has triggered livery designer Peter Hughes to release renders of another scheme that was mooted for the 2024 Super2 retro effort.
“Been a few murmurs on the socials about Jack’s latest retro livery,” Hughes wrote on his Facebook page.
“While it’s gone off with a bang there’s a few grumblings about placing a Holden livery on a Mustang.
“Celebrating our racing heroes of the era rather than the marque seems to have fallen on a few deaf ears… so, I thought I’d show you one of the early ideas Jack and I first proposed.
“The year was 1985 and the only year Larry drove a Ford at Bathurst, with the equally legendary Dick Johnson!
“Would have been a hoot, and it was Mustang on Mustang, but commercial parties preferred the later Janson idea. That’s how it rolls sometimes.
“So the whole insinuation either Jack or myself were Holden bias for this project… nope.”
Perkins added: “Driving a Mustang it would’ve been awesome to do a Dick Johnson/LP retro from 1985. The Janson/LP from 1979 just looked better!
“Love working with (Peter Hughes), we are on the same page with this stuff and he’s the best in the business!”
Jack has previously raced Ford Falcons in the Supercars Championship and Super2 Series, but the upcoming Townsville Super2 round will mark his first in a Mustang.
His efforts to run throwback liveries in the Super2 Series have proven widely popular, particularly in the absence of an official Supercars Retro Round since 2019.
