Why champion is all for new hometown street race

PLANS for Supercars to race on the streets of Perth from 2026 have champion driver Brodie Kostecki excited.

A product of Western Australia, the annual visit to Wanneroo Raceway has tended to have extra meaning to Kostecki.

But he’s far from offended by the notion of trading Wanneroo for an in-town street circuit, per plans announced by the state government on Sunday.

It’s said an event around the Burswood Park precinct could open the Supercars season and attract five times the crowd figures seen at Wanneroo.

“I think it’s been in the pipeline for a while and there was a bit of noise around it during the Perth round,” said Kostecki.

“It’s pretty cool to see, it’s great that the government is getting behind the round and they want to invest into the sport, which is really cool.

“I think it’s important that we change things up and do different things over periods of time to spice things up.”

Spicing things up is something NASCAR has done well over the years, from a pre-season exhibition at the LA Coliseum to racing on dirt at Bristol and the debut of a street course in Chicago.

And despite some fan discontent about Supercars’ pending departure from another historic permanent circuit, Wanneroo is known to not be short on a healthy flow of track bookings, meaning the venue’s future should remain safe.
