THAT Brodie Kostecki’s first big result of the season came at Hidden Valley makes his breakthrough all the more significant.
Kostecki laughed after finishing third in the Sunday race in Darwin: “It means a lot to me actually. I’m not very good here, I kind of suck here.”
The 26-year-old’s Darwin record across his previous three seasons read: eighth, 15th and 24th; 10th, 16th and 24th; and fourth, fourth and 26th.
Last year, Hidden Valley was the only circuit where he recorded neither a pole position nor a podium.
Combine that with the fact he essentially missed the first two days of the 2024 Darwin Triple Crown due to engine dramas and it’s an impressive feat that he was best of the rest behind the dominant Red Bulls.
Ever intent on the bigger picture, Kostecki is now hoping to make further inroads towards the top.
“It’s really hard in this game, it’s very much based on momentum and we sort of haven’t had it too much lately,” said the 2023 champion.
“We sort of missed the first two days with the engine issue that we had, so to start on the front row (on Sunday) and to get a podium was quite cool.
“We were just a couple of days behind the others and to be honest the car didn’t feel all that great in the race, balance-wise, and we were still able to I guess get an easy third.”
Elaborating further, Kostecki said: “There’s been a few dramas here and there, some the team fault and some not.
“This weekend it was nothing to do with the team, so it was quite unfortunate, but the car felt quite good considering the running that we had, so we’ll just put our heads down for Townsville.”
