Murray to get solo wildcard start before enduros

COOPER Murray will make his Repco Supercars Championship debut at a solo-driver round, with Triple Eight set to field him as a wildcard at Hidden Valley.

Triple Eight announced the Super2 Series racer’s signing back in February, Murray becoming the fourth driver to grace the Supercheap Auto-backed program since its inception in 2021.

Murray will follow in the footsteps of his immediate predecessor, Zane Goddard, who became the first driver to get a solo race in Triple Eight’s wildcard entry in Darwin last year.

“To make my Supercars solo main game debut in Darwin is something that I’ve been working towards for quite a while now, and it’s going to be a special weekend,” Murray said.

“My little brother Jett is actually racing in the Toyota 86’s at Phillip Island that weekend which is very unfortunate timing, so my family are going to have to split duties at both events!”

The former Porsche Carrera Cup star is in his second Dunlop Super2 Series campaign with Eggleston Motorsport and has sampled a Gen3 Camaro previously, having taken part in an evaluation day with Erebus Motorsport last September.

He will get his first drive of a Triple Eight-built Chevrolet at the wildcard entry’s first test day at Queensland Raceway on May 28.

“I’m so excited at the thought of getting in the car at our first test day,” Murray added.

“I’ve been looking forward to that moment since we announced I’d be in the driver’s seat, but I’m keeping my cool at the moment, watching a lot of racing and on-board vision, as well as going to the events with Triple Eight to learn as much as I can.”

Wes McDougall will serve as race engineer for the full three-round program, while Jamie Whincup will act as team principal for the Darwin round.

“I’m thrilled that Cooper will also get a standalone event in Darwin for him to get comfortable in these cars,” Whincup said.

“And it’s a great opportunity for our engineers and mechanics to gel as a team before an intense enduro season later in the year.”

The #888 Camaro will be carrying a different livery when Murray hits the track at Hidden Valley, with a fresh look for Supercars’ indigenous round to be revealed at a later date.
