Injury forces Super2 driver swap

ZANE Morse will miss Round 2 of the 2024 Dunlop Series as he continues his recovery from a broken wrist.

Taking over from Morse in the #11 Gen2 Mustang at Perth will be Ryan Gilroy, in what is a reunion with AIM Motorsport for the New South Welshman.

Gilroy raced for AIM last year in Super3, initially in a Holden VF Commodore before shifting into a leased Nissan Altima.

Gilroy started strongly with a Round 1 podium at Newcastle, but his season was cut short by a heavy crash during practice at Bathurst which left him with lingering concussion symptoms.

Now, he’s back and ready to step up for a Super2 debut next week, off the back of a test day at Winton last Friday.

“He has worked a lot on his mental game and his fitness and he tested very well, so AIM Motorsport has decided we’ll give him a run,” team co-owner Andre Morse told V8 Sleuth.

Morse Jr remains touch-and-go for Townsville at this stage. The 24-year-old collected a podium last year in north Queensland.

“He actually won’t get the cast off until the Monday after Perth,” his father reported.

“Obviously being the scaphoid, it’s a big one unfortunately.

“We’re just not going to rush him back because Zane actually works for a living. He helps run the family business and we don’t want to jeopardise his future.

“Like we’ve spoken to guys like Brodie Kostecki and Chaz Mostert who’ve all had the same injury and they’re all saying the same thing: ‘don’t race back’.”

Gilroy will be teammates at Wanneroo Raceway with former Super3 rival Jett Johnson, who’ll be back behind the wheel of AIM’s #117 NAPA Auto Parts/Titan Caravans Australia Ford.
